A team at Boston University created biodegradable adhesives with a honey-like consistency. It is prepared with a blend of naturally-sourced biopolymers and carbon dioxide (CO2). The team confirms that the sticking strength of the adhesive can be varied by the polymer-to-CO2 ratio, which can range from the strength of scotch tape to strong wood glue.
Adhesives can stick to different surfaces and are biocompatible. Thus, they are used in surgical procedures for internal and external wounds. As it is degradable, it harmlessly breaks down in the body and is dissolved and discarded in around a year.
The COVID-19 pandemic impeded the global biodegradable adhesives market due to the decline in the demand for biodegradable adhesives from the end-use industries. Governments worldwide prolonged the shutdown of factories across industries, as a part of preventive measure to curb the virus spread, thereby halting the production and supply of goods. The pandemic encouraged key players to implement technologies to overcome these challenges by either delaying their production or rescheduling their existing projects.
