The Global Biodegradable Adhesives Market size was valued at USD 7.26 Billion in 2022 and is expected to surpass USD 17.12 Billion by 2031, expanding at a CAGR of 10% during the forecast period, 2023–2031. Biodegradable adhesives are an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional adhering solutions, which propels the market.
Biodegradable adhesives decompose naturally. They can be broken down with the help of carbon dioxide, water, methane, inorganic compounds, or biomass. Enzymatic actions convert adhesives into a biodegradable and decomposable mixture that benefits the environment. Biodegradable adhesives and polymers decompose with different mechanisms such as hydro-biodegradable or photo-biodegradable.
Natural sources including starch, plant resins, and animal glues are used to make dissolvable adhesives. Decomposable liquid glues are made from a variety of starches such as corn, potato, wheat, and gelatin netting. Furthermore, these adhesives contain wetting agents, antioxidants, film formers, solvents, antifungal agents, and other components.
A team at Boston University created biodegradable adhesives with a honey-like consistency. It is prepared with a blend of naturally-sourced biopolymers and carbon dioxide (CO2). The team confirms that the sticking strength of the adhesive can be varied by the polymer-to-CO2 ratio, which can range from the strength of scotch tape to strong wood glue.
Adhesives can stick to different surfaces and are biocompatible. Thus, they are used in surgical procedures for internal and external wounds. As it is degradable, it harmlessly breaks down in the body and is dissolved and discarded in around a year.
The COVID-19 pandemic impeded the global biodegradable adhesives market due to the decline in the demand for biodegradable adhesives from the end-use industries. Governments worldwide prolonged the shutdown of factories across industries, as a part of preventive measure to curb the virus spread, thereby halting the production and supply of goods. The pandemic encouraged key players to implement technologies to overcome these challenges by either delaying their production or rescheduling their existing projects.
Biodegradable Adhesives Market Dynamics
Major Drivers
Growing use of biodegradable adhesives eliminates the need for investment in waste management. As adhesives get decomposed in the soil, they do not require disposal management. Non-toxic, environmentally friendly, stable quality, and easy availability are some factors fueling the market. Increasing number of applications in the end-use industries and rising adoption of decomposable adhesives are anticipated to boost the market.
Existing Restraints
Poor moisture resistance, mold growth, and reaction to physical environment & chemicals are expected to restrain the biodegradable adhesives market. Exposure to the environment causes the occurrence of moisture, which can reduce adhering strength of the adhesives. Additionally, molds formed due to moisture can cause breathing difficulty and corrosion of materials. These factors are expected to restrain the market.
Emerging Opportunities
Rising government initiatives in creating awareness regarding the benefits of biodegradable adhesives and stringent rules against environmental pollution are projected to create lucrative opportunities in the market.

Biodegradable Adhesives Market Segment Insights
Based on type, the biodegradable adhesives market is divided into heat seal adhesives, hot melt adhesives, and pressure-sensitive adhesives. The pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) segment is expected to expand at a significant pace during the projection period, as it does not require any additional heat or chemicals to adhere. Even applications on various surfaces and easy availability of PSA are anticipated to drive the segment in the forecast period.
On the basis of application, the global market is segregated into medical, consumer goods, packaging, and others. The packaging segment is projected to register a considerable CAGR in the coming years. Natural adhesives ensure sustainable packaging methods and can be recycled and disposed of in a safe way without harming the environment, which in turn, boosts the segment.
In terms of region, the global biodegradable adhesives market is classified as Asia Pacific, North America, Latin America, Europe, and Middle East & Africa. North America is expected to dominate the market during the projection period due to the high penetration of eco-friendly adhesive products in various industries. It is supported by the increased awareness of sustainable solutions and reduced carbon footprint. The market is driven by a surge in the consumption of packaged food and medicine, thus supporting the market growth in the region.
Asia Pacific is projected to hold a significant market share in the projection period attributing to the increasing disposable income. Numerous sectors including e-commerce and food & beverage industries are adopting sustainable solutions for packaging. Strict government regulations for waste management in the region are projected to propel the regional market in coming years.
