Vertical pumps usually work with a diesel engine or an electric motor. At least one spinning impeller is connected to the motor through a shaft submerged in a liquid. The pump starts working when the liquid flows through it through suction or vacuum bell. It moves the impeller to raise the velocity of the flow of the liquid.

The liquid flows over the impeller into a diffuser bowl. Through the diffuser bowl, the liquid flows through the length of a vertical pipe towards a discharge head located on the surface area. A vertical immersion pump is one type of vertical pump.

Vertical immersion pumps, also referred to as shaft pumps and vertical column pumps, are pumps with elongated shafts encased in columns that separate the motor from the pump. In these types of pumps, pump impellers are submerged in fluid, while vertical shafts keep motors outside of fluids. Vertical immersion pumps as different from submersible pumps, where the whole assembly is immersed in fluids. There are two types of vertical immersion pumps available: cantilever pumps and line shaft pumps.

A cantilever pump has an extended motor shaft, which limits its length to around two meters. A line shaft pump has a similar design to a cantilever pump; however, this type of pump has a separate working shaft apart from a motor. A Line shaft pump is manufactured with longer lengths than a cantilever pump. The designs of vertical immersion pumps are similar to vertical centrifugal immersion pumps, where end suction is connected to the end of a column.

An impeller of a pump is stored in a special case, which is submerged in fluids. A shaft is connected to the impeller to facilitate its workings. A motor is placed on a base plate outside of the fluids, connecting to the submerged impeller. Vertical immersion pumps do not rely on a single bearing to take the load of a pump. The weight is distributed to several connected parts, which adds to the strength and lifespan of these pumps.


Such design of these pumps proves to be beneficial in comparison to the other types of pumps. These pumps are suited for deep tanks, wells, and sumps. These pumps have their motors placed outside the fluids, which facilitates them to be submerged in deep lengths according to the length of the tanks, wells, and sumps.

Vertical immersion pumps withstand high-temperature fluids, as their seals are situated outside of the fluid. This aids in avoiding progressive degradation of the pumps. When the liquid reaches its boiling point, it poses a threat of added pressure on the suction side of the pump. However, the design of the vertical immersion pumps aids in tackling the added pressure concern. The design of the pumps aids them in transferring flammable liquids as well. Vertical immersion pumps are compact and easy to maintain.

The motor of these pumps is installed outside of the fluid, which makes the pumps less susceptible to motor and seal failure. These pumps can have individual components designed and manufactured with a specific material to facilitate them to work for a specific application. Different materials that are compatible with different liquids and chemicals aid in eliminating cross-contamination within the materials. Vertical immersion pumps are used for various applications such as water supply, irrigation, dewatering, water cooling, geothermal well, oils, fuels, & lubricants transfer, and others in various industries.
