The global calcium propionate market size was around USD 341.63 million in 2022 and is anticipated to reach USD 534.54 million by 2031, accelerating at a CAGR of 5.1% during the forecast period, 2023–2031. The market growth is attributed to the rising customer demand for food & beverage products, impacted by the increasing global population and changing lifestyle of consumers globally.

Calcium propionate or calcium propanoate, also known as E282, is an organic salt primarily used as a food additive for various food & beverage items. It has the chemical formula, Ca(C2H5COO)2 that occurs due to a reaction between two compounds namely propionic acid and calcium hydroxide.

Calcium Propionate Market Key Takeaways

Calcium propanoate is also found naturally in food products such as butter and cheese. This organic salt is extensively used as a preservative in bakery items such as pastries, muffins, and bread as it helps in extending the shelf life of baked products.

The wide application of calcium propionate from food manufacturers is attributed to its high capabilities to prevent the reproduction and growth of microorganisms including bacteria, molds, and fungi in food items. Apart from baked goods, calcium propionate is widely used as an antimicrobial agent in a range of food products including dairy & frozen desserts, fish & seafood products, meats, and soft drinks.

Considering the imperative roles of antimicrobial agents and other superior advantages, calcium propionate is extensively used as a main component across industries including pharmaceuticals, personal care, and animal feed. Like other applications, calcium propanoate is used as a vital food additive in animal feed to minimize the formation of mold and bacteria in animal feed, which results in retaining the nutrition of the food for a longer period of time.

The additive compound also further helps in enhancing the shelf life of animal feed. In general, calcium comprises 21 grams in 100 grams of calcium propanoate. However, the food additive is easily dissolved in the digestive tract without leaving nutrition to help in cell development in the body.

Existing government regulations on calcium propionate safety concerns

In the 1930s, several food manufacturers, especially in the US began using calcium propionate in wide-scale commercial production of food items as it was found effective in inhibiting bacteria growth in bread.

With the massive commercial expansion of calcium propionate in food manufacturing, various international organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations started testing the compound for examining the safety concerns of food products using calcium propionate.

In 1979 research conducted by a selected committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), calcium propionate was categorized as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) and approved for food production in the food & beverage industry.

Similarly, the European Food Safety Authority made an assessment of calcium propionate as a food preservative in 2014 declaring that no safety concerns or health risks were associated with the use of the additive.

Although the additive is accepted as a very low-risk food substance by WHO and FAO, the organizations have not yet properly established regulations about how much calcium propionate is considered to be safe or acceptable for daily intake. According to FDA, the use of 0.1-0.4% of calcium propionate is safe for food products and up to 1% for animal feed.

COVID-19 Impact

The market report finds that the COVID-19 pandemic adversely impacted the food & beverage industry due to the prolonged shutdown of bakery stores and offline stores selling beverage items. Labor shortage was one of the major factors hampering the food & beverage industry, which led to the shortfall in the production of food products to meet the demand of consumers globally during the pandemic.

Moreover, the plummeting demand for meats, soft drinks, and seafood products, considering potential health risks associated with the COVID-19 virus spread, had affected the overall revenue of the global calcium propionate market.

On contrary, the pandemic widened the demand for calcium propionate owing to the rising demand from manufacturers for the production of several essential items including dairy and personal care products. Calcium propionate is largely used as a key preservative agent in personal care products to maintain the pH level and prevent the components use from degrading in products.

With the sharp decline in global coronavirus cases, emergency lockdowns imposed by governments across the globe resulted in resuming normal operation of raw material supply and transport services. Thus, the reopening of offline bakery stores and food manufacturing factories is expected to accelerate the overall demand for calcium propionate in the near future.

The issues related to mold and bacterial formation and development in food products are costly matters, especially in bakery product manufacturing.

Using food additives, food manufacturers can avoid the risk of microorganism growth in food and beverage products and preserve the natural nutritional quality of foods for a better and healthier way of consumer usage.

Growing demand for processed meats and animal feed

Growing demand for processed meats and ready-to-eat products such as pizzas, burgers, and hot dogs is another key driver of the market. The rising number of meat consumers globally, impacted by the increasing awareness of protein intake for various health benefits, pushes to accelerate the demand for processed meats.

Calcium propionate is an ideal preservative agent, which is widely used in meat processing to increase shelf life and retain original nutrition in meat products. Moreover, the rising adoption of pets and the rapid expansion of animal husbandry are key factors that drive the demand for animal feed.

Cost-effective food additive for nutrition preservation

Calcium propionate is an ideal food additive that offers a cost-effective solution for food preservation. Compared to alternative preservatives such as sorbic acid, sodium propionate, sodium benzoate, and sorbates; calcium propionate offers less cost in the operation of food preservation that also helps in retaining high-quality of nutrition. Increasing demand for cost-effective food additives in the food & beverage industry presents another main factor propelling the market.

Existing Restraints

Strict government regulations and health risks associated with the excessive use of chemical additives

Stringent government regulations toward the use of chemical additives in the food & beverage industry are major restraining factors hampering the market. To meet regulation compliance, food manufacturers had to find the right ingredient formulations and maintain the quality of food products by using preservatives.

Such strict government policies for food safety and quality maintenance are likely to impede the global market in the coming years. Although it is accepted as a GRAS food substance by various health-related organizations, however, the excessive consumption of calcium propionate in food products in daily intake is associated with certain health risks. Direct inhale of calcium propionate may cause respiratory and irritation issues.

Emerging Opportunities:

Technological advancements in preserving and fermentation techniques

Rapid development in technology in the food & beverage industry and the rising introduction of innovative preserving and fermentation techniques offer lucrative opportunities for the market. The wide introduction of advanced technologies including MAP, bacteriophages, and other fermentation techniques for better preservation and maintaining the good quality of foods is likely to spur the global market in the coming years.

The increasing use of calcium propionate in natural food preservatives especially bread and rolls is influenced by the fact that the food additive has little effect on yeast and its fermentation. With the help of advanced food preservation technologies and the use of calcium propionate, food and beverage products can be stored afresh for a longer period of time.
