Laryngeal Mask Airway Market Outlook

The global laryngeal mask airway market size was valued at USD 152.3 Million in 2019 and is projected to reach USD 253.2 Million by 2027 expanding at a CAGR of 6.6 % during the forecast period, 2020-2027. Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is a supraglottic airway device developed by Dr Archi Brain in 1981, which received FDA approval in 1991.

These masks are used for keeping the patient’s airway open when unconscious and under anesthesia. They are made from materials such as PVC, silicone, polycarbonate, polypropylene, and paper. PVC and silicone are primarily used for making these masks. Types of LMAs include, reusable and disposable (single-use).

Laryngeal Mask Airway Market Outlook

Single-use masks are widely used by people; therefore, the segment is expected to hold a major share of the market. These masks are good alternatives of face masks and endotracheal tubes, and are available in different sizes.

The selection of LMA depends on the weight of the patient. The mask consists of several part such as cuff, aperture bar, airway connector, inflation tube, inflation balloon, and valve. The valve and inflation line are used to fill air in the cuff, which is inflated and placed in hypopharynx.

These masks are widely used by surgeons and physician in emergency care units of hospitals and clinics. The disposable mask needs to be disposed through hospital waste, while the reusable mask needs to be sterilized by steam sterilization. Reusable masks are sterilized using autoclaving at 137°C or 278.6°F for at least 10 minutes.

LMA are medical devices; therefore, they need regulatory approvals, stringent regulatory policies, and standards for medical devices. 
LMA masks consist of several parts such as cuff, aperture bars, connector, airway tube, inflation line, balloon, and inflation pilot balloon.

Several materials are used to produce these masks. For making Reusable LMA, materials such as silicone, polycarbonate, polypropylene, and paper are used, while PVC, polycarbonate, polypropylene, ABS plastic, and paper are employed for manufacturing disposable LMA.
