Report Description

The global silanes market size was valued at USD 2.8 Bn in 2022 and is likely to reach USD 4.77 Bn by 2031, expanding at a CAGR of 6.1% during 2023–2031. The market growth is attributed to the rising demand for silanes and their derivatives in end-use industries.

Silane or mono-silane is an inorganic compound composed of silicon and hydrogen, also called silicon hydrides (SiH₄). It is a colorless gas, which has an extremely unpleasant pungent odor.  The gas is flammable and toxic in nature and oxidizes quickly when exposed to air. It is observed that exposure to silanes cause moderate to severe irritation in the nose, eyes, and skin, and causes seizures in severe cases of prolonged exposure to the gas. Silanes are stored inside an exhausted gas cabinet, enclosed away from any combustible materials and ignition sources.

Silanes Market Outlook

Silane coupling agents are majorly used as binding materials between organic and inorganic materials. The primary purpose of silanes is to bind concrete to the masonry. Coupling two compounds with different chemical compositions is achieved by using silane-based products such as silane-based paints, plastics, inks, coatings, sealants, adhesives, and composites. Silanes also bind composites of resin and silica-based materials. It is used as a waterproofing agent that can be applied to wood, bricks, and concrete.

Silanes have the capability to form mechanical bonds with material surfaces. Mechanical bonding is referred to as the property of silanes to penetrate the material surfaces to their molecular level without changing the chemical properties of the materials. This makes silanes useful in surface modification of the materials. It improves the material properties such as tensile strength, adhesion, and mechanical strength of a surface.

The usage of silanes in crosslinking of polymers helps chemically combine two polymer chains. Different polymers are chemically linked by using the process of crosslinking in which two polymers with different useful chemical properties are combined to produce a new material. When used in crosslinking, silanes form single covalent bonds between two complex chains of polymers and provide a more defined structure.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the market faced a significant downturn, as the major industries such as construction, electronics, and textile industries had all ceased their operations. The manufacturing units were also grappling with the shortage of supplies of raw materials, owing to the several limitations on import & export activities. This in turn slowed down the market growth until the COVID restrictions were lifted by the concerned government.

In the post-pandemic period, the market struggled to recover from the global recession. However, after resuming the operations of end-use industries, the market picked up pace.

Silanes Market Dynamics

Silanes Market Dynamics

Major Drivers

Increasing adoption of silane derivatives for waterproofing purposes is anticipated to drive the market in the coming years. The alkaline substrate for waterproofing such as cement & limewater surfaces, bricks, and other construction products is composed of calcium hydroxide. The silane water repellents penetrate the substrates and react chemically with them, which forms hydrophobic resin. The formation of the water-repellent resin occurs inside the small pores on the substrates’ surfaces resulting in an ultimate solution for waterproofing.  Furthermore, it is used for waterproofing wood as well.

Growing usage of silane-based coatings to improve material properties is likely to boost the market. Silanes are capable of creating long-lasting bonds with materials such as metals, ceramics, glass, and others. The silane-based coating over such surfaces makes them UV resistant, improves tensile strength, and enhanced the durability of the materials.

Rising incorporation of silanes in construction for concrete curing is expected to fuel the market. Curing is the process of maintaining right amount of moisture and temperature of an alkaline concrete mixture while mixing. This is essential in bringing out its properties such as strength and durability. Silanes form hydrating resin, which ensures proper hydration of concrete by deeply curing the mixture gradually.

Existing Restraints

The high cost of silanes and their derivatives is projected to hinder market growth. Silanes are made of raw silicon and coal that are obtained from silica, which are costly components that significantly increase production costs. Moreover, fluctuations in coal prices may restrain the market to a certain limit.

Emerging Opportunities

Rising research and development to find cheap alternatives to replace the raw materials of silanes is expected to create immense growth opportunities in the market. Furthermore, many key players are conducting research to discover new areas for the application of silanes to improve the utility of the compound, which is likely to propel the market.

Silanes Market Segment Insights

Based on product type, the silanes market is divided into mono silanes, chloro silanes, functional silanes, and amino silanes. The mono silanes segment held a large market share in 2022 and is expected to expand at a significant growth rate during the projection period, owing to its wide adoption in photovoltaic materials and devices. The silane-based coating helps in waterproofing the solar panels, as it provides strong adhesion and sealing properties. The ability of mono silane to generate electricity without emission or pollution is further likely to boost the segment.

Silanes Market Product Type

On the basis of application, the market is segregated into rubber & plastics, fiber treatment, paints & coatings, and adhesives & sealants. The rubber & plastics segment accounted for a key share of the market in 2022 and is projected to register a considerable CAGR during the forecast period, as silane is widely used as a filler in rubber & plastic, due to its strong coupling and dispersing properties. Such properties enhance the performance of rubber & plastics. Coupling with simple covalent bonds helps manufacturers to form desired plastic and rubber. It provides more definite structures to plastics at a molecular level.

Silanes Market Application

In terms of end-user, the market is segmented into buildings & construction, personal care & cosmetics, electronics & semiconductors, and automotive. The buildings & construction segment held a significant share of the market in 2022 and is estimated to grow at a significant pace in the coming years, owing to the vast applications of silanes in the construction industry such as waterproofing, rustproofing, and in improving the tensile strength of the material surfaces. Rising construction activities across the globe are likely to propel the segment.

The electronics & semiconductor segment is anticipated to grow at a rapid pace during the assessment period, due to the growing technological advancements to widen the scope for applications of silanes in semiconductors and complex electronics.

For instance, Shin-Etsu’s highly purified silane gas is utilized in multiple applications including electronics & semiconductors for improving adhesion and reducing the hydrophilic nature of optical fibers.

In terms of region, the global Silanes market is classified as Asia Pacific, North America, Latin America, Europe, and Middle East & Africa. Asia Pacific is expected to dominate the market during the projection period, owing to the rising construction activities in the region including roadways & highways. Concrete is a majorly used alkaline product in construction which requires waterproofing and hydrated mixing. Moreover, silane-based coatings ensure the essential friction for the vehicles and the long-lasting structural stability of the road’s surface.
