Bisphenol A, known as BPA, is an organic chemical. The chemical serves as a building block in the manufacture of polymer plastics and coatings, largely polycarbonate and epoxy resins. Applications of BPA-based polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins are several and varied, such as computers and home appliances, DVDs, spectacles, optical lenses, reusable bottles and food storage containers, safety helmets, construction supplies, in linings for food and drink cans, and in performance paints and coatings.
Polycarbonate plastic is the key application for BPA, accounting for nearly 70% of worldwide BPA production. It is often preferred, owing to its durability, clarity, and heat and shatter-resistance, which are decisive for applications such as spectacle lenses and medical equipment. Epoxy resins make up around 30% of total BPA use.
In the view of human exposure to BPA, food intake is considered as a serious health hazard, as it potentially spreads across different age groups which includes infants and has a inadvertent impact that occurs over long time periods. BPA is regarded an endocrine disruptor. Several studies indicated a relationship between exposure to BPA and the appearance of adverse health effects, such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, and infertility, among others.
BPA is a reproductive, developmental, and systemic toxicant as observed in animal studies and is weakly estrogenic. Many questions revolve around its potential negative impact on the health of children as well as the environment. Acrylic and polyester coatings are currently used as first-generation alternatives to epoxy coatings. Recently, polyolefin and non-BPA epoxy coatings have been developed.
The primary replacement for BPA in reusable water bottles is Tritan copolyester, which was introduced in October 2007 by Eastman Chemical Company. In contrast to polycarbonate, Tritan is light in weight, due to its low density and resistance to elements such as stress, water, scratch, and chemicals, which permits it to hold up without cracking.
Numerous alternative bottle materials, in addition to Tritan copolyester, are currently available or under development. While few BPA-free bottles are sold for slightly high prices, there are many plastic bottles made without BPA which cost nearly four times that of the conventional ones. Bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) are used to replace BPA in plastics lining aluminum. According to a study published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, these two substances are linked with an increased likelihood of childhood obesity. Materials used as a substitute for BPA include non-BPA, polyester epoxies, and olefin polymers.

The report on China & SEA BPA-Free Can Coatings market includes an assessment of the market, size, share, trends, segments, and country markets. Overview and dynamics have been included in the report.
BPA is linked with causing immunity, reproductive, and neurological problems. Consumption of BPA increases the likelihood of Alzheimer’s, metabolic disease, childhood asthma, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. BPA leaches into the contents of canned food or beverages. Consumers and manufacturers have become aware about these side effects of BPA in long-term consumption. Several manufacturers are taking initiatives to include BPA-free coatings in food and beverage cans.
Government policies surrounding the usage of BPA, particularly in relation to products which are consumed by infants, are become strict. Governments in the region are gradually taking cognizance of health issues caused as an aftermath of BPA consumption and want to offer security and protection to consumers. Regulations and directives given by various governments to coating and resin industries are estimated to drive the market.
The pandemic caused a complete shutdown in various countries. The shutdown resulted in disruptions of supply chain and production cycle. At-home consumption during the lockdown increased; however, out-of-home consumption, which traditionally creates high profits, came to a near standstill. These factors are anticipated to impede the market growth.
Manufacturers are increasingly involved in research for safe and BPA-free substances, which are used to replace conventional BPA coatings. A variety of alternatives are available to Bisphenol A; however, the option of BPA-free material for use in mass production, reasonable cost, easy operation, and function is still being explored. In the future, harmless BPA-free coatings made from various materials are projected to be an opportunity for the market.
The China & SEA BPA-Free Can Coatings market is expected to grow at 4.7% CAGR during the forecast period owing to the growing health risk awareness associated with bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is toxic and has many side effects to the human body, hence consumers are now days demanding for BPA free food or cans free from BPA content.
