Ampoules are a long-established way of primary packaging for pharmaceutical drugs. An ampoule is a hermetically sealed small bulbous capsule that is used to hold a sterile solution for hypodermic injection or a powdered drug that needs to be used to make a solution. There are also straight stem and funnel-type ampoules which are open, but they must be thoroughly sterilized before usage.  Ampoules are usually of glass, but plastic ampoules are also available, the glass ones need to be disposed of properly.

Glass ampoules are costlier than bottles or other basic containers. Ampoules were invented around the same time when injections were newly developed. Ampoules are similar to vials, but the major difference is that ampoules are of one-time use, once the seal is broken to have access to the stored pharmacy drug or any other liquid or solid, it must be thrown away, while vials can be used multiple times. Ampoules are used to store those types of drugs that need to be protected from air and contaminants.

Ampoules generally have colored rings around their necks that are there to help one recognize the substance inside the ampoule. These colored rings are machine-readable, and these allow for accurate handling of the substance for the intent of storage, secondary packaging, and labeling. During the manufacturing process, color coding of modern ampoules is done.
