Liquid Crystal On Silicon Market Outlook

Liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) is a reflective active-matrix liquid crystal display, also known as microdisplay, that has a liquid crystal layer on top of a silicon backplane, which is also called as special light modulator. The LCoS was primarily invented for the projection purpose. However, now it is used for wavelength selective switching, structured illumination, near-eye displays, and optical pulse shaping.

Some LCD projectors use transmissive LCD that allows the light to pass through the liquid crystal. 
LCoS displays are mainly bifurcated into two major categories, single-panel and three-panel designs. In single panel design, one display chip indicates green, blue, and red components simultaneously.

When the frequency of color fields reduces than 540 Hz, an color break up effect can be witnessed on the display. To display all three colors over a single frame time, the single-panel projectors need a high-speed display component, which are cost-effective than that of three-panels.

In three-panel design, each color has one display chip, where the images are merged optically. The white light is fragmented into three components, namely green, blue, and red, and are congregated again after the modulation. Thus, the light is polarized by the beam splitters.
