Blood collection from capillaries has been performed for many years. The technique was first used to collect blood from children for genetic testing. Small-volume sampling is widely used for various blood collection applications as it offers easy steps for drawing five or ten µl from a newborn baby.

In adults, capillary blood is obtained by pricking a finger, while it is obtained by pricking a foot in babies and small children. The specimen is then collected with a pipette, mounted on a glass slide or filter paper, or absorbed by a micro sampling device's tip. Capillary blood is used to measure glucose levels by moving it to a test strip. In general, both patients and laboratory technicians prefer capillary blood collection. The approach is easier to use, less painful, and rarely necessarily requires the use of a "second stick." Except in a few cases, the results of capillary blood versus plasma are equivalent. In such instances, the results must be compared to data collected using the same procedure.
