Depending on the size of the turbine and the lengths of its blades, the amount of power which can be collected is derived. Theoretically, when the speed of wind is doubled, wind energy generation capacity rises by the factor of eight. The output is directly proportional to the cube of wind speed and the dimension of the rotor. The average potential of wind turbine is between 1.6 MW to 2 MW. In commercial use, the wind turbine has reached 8 MW potential, with rotor diameter of 164 meters.

When wind flows across the blades, the pressure on one side of blade decreases. The increase and decrease of air pressure along the two side of blade create both drag and lift. The lift force is stronger than the drag force, which causes the rotor to spin. The rotor is connected to the generator directly through shaft and series of gearbox. The transmission of aerodynamic force to the rotation of generator creates electricity.

The amount of land required for wind energy system depends on the factor such as characteristics of local ground and the desired size of the wind farm. Offshore wind is stronger and steadier than on land. However, the maintenance and construction costs are higher than onshore wind systems. Generally, spacing of wind turbine depends on the local wind conditions and the rotor diameter.

As per the data published on REVE, around 635 wind farms and 7,738 wind turbines are built in Brazil.  According to data published in June 2020 by the Brazilian Wind Energy Association, the installed capacity is about 16 GW. The National Energy Plan 2050 expects it to reach between 110 GW and 195 GW in the coming decades.
