Bio-derived polybutadiene is a synthetic rubber produced from renewable, bio-based feedstocks such as biomass, bioethanol, or sugar-derived butadiene, rather than from petroleum-based raw materials. While it shares the same fundamental chemical structure and performance properties as conventional polybutadiene, including high elasticity, abrasion resistance, and low rolling resistance, its production process results in significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. As of 2025, advances in fermentation technology and catalytic polymerization have narrowed the performance gap between bio-derived and petroleum-based variants, making bio-derived polybutadiene a commercially viable and increasingly preferred alternative across industries committed to sustainability.
