Bio-cement is a class of binding material produced through biological processes, most notably microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) or enzyme-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (EICP), rather than the energy-intensive kiln firing used in traditional Portland cement manufacture. While conventional cement production accounts for roughly 8% of global CO2 emissions, bio-cement leverages microorganisms or enzymes to precipitate calcium carbonate, dramatically lowering the carbon footprint. As of 2025, bio-cement products are also valued for their self-healing properties, enhanced soil compatibility, and reduced chemical additive requirements, setting them apart from traditional binders in both environmental and performance terms.
