Video Game Software Market to Reach USD 317.0 Billion by 2034 as GTA VI Launches and EA Goes Private

By Growth Market Reports Research, published , updated

Ontario, California, 28 September 2026. Consumers worldwide spent USD 199.8 billion on video game software in 2025, and the market is projected to reach USD 317.0 billion by 2034, a CAGR of 5.3% from 2026 to 2034, according to the new Video Game Software Market report from Growth Market Reports. The report arrives as the industry heads into its biggest launch window in more than a decade: Grand Theft Auto VI is set for 19 November 2026, and Electronic Arts has just become a private company in a buyout valued at about USD 55 billion.

A record buyout and a record launch in the same year

On 4 August 2026, Electronic Arts completed its acquisition by PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, a deal first announced on 29 September 2025. EA closed its last year as a listed company with record fiscal 2026 net bookings of USD 8,026 million, up 9%. Three days later, Take-Two Interactive reported USD 1.39 billion of April to June net bookings and reiterated a fiscal 2027 outlook of USD 8.0 to 8.2 billion, built around Grand Theft Auto VI launching on 19 November 2026. By Growth Market Reports' analysis, that release lifts spending in the final weeks of 2026 and through 2027, on top of steady growth in China, where domestic game revenue rose about 12% in the first half of 2026 according to official figures.

Mobile and digital dominate

Mobile games earn 54% of spending, making mobile the largest platform, while cloud streaming, VR and browser games are the fastest-growing platforms from a small base. Action and shooter games are the largest genre at 30% of spending. Online sales, including digital downloads, in-game purchases and subscriptions, account for 95.2% of the market, and individual consumers account for 97%. Nintendo's own results show how quickly the shift continues: digital sales rose 90.0% to JPY 132.7 billion in the April to June 2026 quarter, 61.5% of its software sales.

Asia Pacific leads, Latin America grows fastest

Asia Pacific holds 45.5% of the market, ahead of North America at 28.0%, Europe at 18.5%, Latin America at 4.2% and the Middle East and Africa at 3.8%. Latin America is the fastest-growing region at a 7.3% CAGR through 2034. The five largest companies, Tencent, Sony, Microsoft, NetEase and Electronic Arts, together take about 45% of consumer spending. Tencent remains the largest games company in the world, with games revenue of RMB 241.6 billion in 2025.

Subscription prices move in both directions

Premium console releases now list at up to USD 79.99, the price of Mario Kart World on Switch 2. Subscriptions are heading the other way at the top end: on 21 April 2026 Microsoft cut Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from USD 29.99 to USD 22.99 a month and PC Game Pass from USD 16.49 to USD 13.99, while PlayStation Plus runs USD 10.99 to 19.99 a month. The report's pricing chapter compares full-game, subscription and store revenue share models.

"Game spending is growing again, but the gains are going to the companies with the biggest franchises and the deepest live services. A single launch like Grand Theft Auto VI can move a year's numbers, while ownership changes such as EA's buyout show how much capital is betting on long-running games rather than new platforms."
