Grid-Enhancing Technologies Market to Reach USD 6.67 Billion by 2034 as DOE Commits USD 1.9 Billion to Existing Lines

By Growth Market Reports Research, published , updated

Ontario, California, 28 September 2026. The global grid-enhancing technologies market was worth USD 2.05 billion in 2025 and will reach USD 6.67 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 14.0% from 2025 to 2034, according to the new Grid-Enhancing Technologies Market report from Growth Market Reports. The report comes days after the US Department of Energy selected 31 projects in 26 states for its Speed to Power (SPARK) program, putting USD 1.9 billion of federal funding behind reconductoring and grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) on existing power lines.

USD 1.9 billion of federal money moves GETs from pilots to projects

On 24 September 2026 the Department of Energy announced the SPARK selections: USD 1.9 billion of federal funding matched by USD 3.35 billion of cost share, for USD 5.25 billion of total project value. The projects will reconductor more than 1,500 miles of line, deploy GETs on nearly 21,000 miles and add more than 23 GW of transmission capacity. DOE expects award negotiations to run from October 2026 to January 2027, which is when most of this spending turns into equipment and software orders. The report treats this round as the main reason growth runs at 15% to 16% a year from 2026 to 2028 before easing as the conductor base matures.

Utilities keep signing dynamic line rating contracts

Grid operators are also buying on their own. National Grid in Britain awarded a five-year dynamic line rating framework in April 2026 that adds 39 circuits and up to GBP 50 million of consumer savings. Norway's Statnett selected Heimdall Power in its DLR tender in June, and Polish distribution operator Energa-Operator, which serves more than 3 million customers, signed in September. On 17 September LineVision raised a USD 37.5 million Series D, with National Grid Partners participating, to scale its NexusIQ DLR platform. In the United States, PJM became the first regional transmission organization to run ambient-adjusted ratings under FERC Order 881 in March 2026, across 47 weather zones.

Advanced conductors lead, topology optimization grows fastest

Advanced conductors, the composite-core and high-temperature wires used to reconductor existing towers, are the largest technology at 51% of 2025 revenue. Topology optimization, the software that reroutes power by switching existing breakers, is the fastest-growing technology from a small base. By application, congestion relief and capacity uprating lead with 38% of revenue, while load growth and data center connections grow fastest: PG&E used SmartValve power flow controllers to add 100 MW of firm capacity in San Jose, where a new line is not planned until 2032. Hardware earns 78% of revenue, software grows fastest, and transmission utilities and TSOs buy 72% of the market. The top five companies hold about 45% of revenue.

North America leads, Latin America grows fastest

North America holds 36.0% of the market, driven by federal grants, FERC Order 1920's requirement to consider GETs in long-term planning and new state laws. Asia Pacific holds 32.0% on reconductoring in China, India and Bangladesh and becomes the largest region by 2034. Europe holds 24.5%, Latin America 4.5% and the Middle East and Africa 3.0%. Latin America is the fastest-growing region at a 15.3% CAGR as Colombia and Brazil use power flow control to connect wind, solar and new load.

Cheap next to a new line

The cost gap explains the demand. In a DOE report to Congress, fitting DLR on a 22-mile 345 kV line cost about USD 500,000, against USD 22 million to 176 million to upgrade the line, and saved more than USD 4 million of congestion costs a year. The report's cost benchmarks compare DLR, power flow control and reconductoring projects.

"Grid-enhancing technologies have stopped being a planning footnote. With federal money committed, FERC rules in force and European grid operators signing multi-year contracts, the question for utilities is no longer whether to use them but which line gets which tool first. The fastest gains are in software, where topology optimization and ambient ratings use equipment utilities already own."
