Cruise Ship Refurbishment Market to Reach USD 6.63 Billion by 2034 as Cruise Lines Book Mid-Life Refits Through 2028

By Growth Market Reports Research, published , updated

Ontario, California, 28 September 2026. The global cruise ship refurbishment market was worth USD 4.10 billion in 2025 and will reach USD 6.63 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 5.5%, according to the new Cruise Ship Refurbishment Market report from Growth Market Reports. The report arrives as the cruise lines book the next wave of mid-life refits: on 9 September 2026 Cunard confirmed a drydock for Queen Mary 2 and Holland America brought forward the first ship of its largest fleet update, while one week later the cruise industry's own environmental report counted 47 more ships lined up for shore power retrofits.

Mid-life programs are filling the drydock calendar to 2028

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 will be in drydock at Damen Shiprepair Brest from 31 March to 9 May 2027, a refit that adds 31 staterooms to the ship (Cunard). Holland America Line moved the Evolution refit of Oosterdam in Marseille forward by five weeks, with the ship returning to service on 31 October 2027 (Holland America Line). Oosterdam is the first of six ships in the Evolution program, which Holland America describes as a USD 500 million-plus investment and the largest fleet update in its 153-year history; Oosterdam alone gains 76 staterooms (Holland America Line). AIDA Cruises has set Marseille dock dates for four more ships of its own Evolution program through March 2028, at about EUR 100 million per ship (AIDA Cruises).

The common thread is revenue space. Cruise lines are no longer refitting only to refresh decor: they are adding cabins, suites and venues to ships in mid-life, which lets a refit earn back its cost through higher fares and more berths.

Interiors lead, technical upgrades grow fastest

Interior and hotel refurbishment, covering cabins, suites, restaurants and public spaces, is the largest type of work at 46% of 2025 spending. Technical and systems upgrades are the fastest-growing type as regulation reaches ships already in service. From 2027 shipping companies must surrender EU emissions allowances for 100% of their reported emissions (European Commission), and FuelEU Maritime requires passenger ships to connect to shore power at major EU ports from 2030 (FuelEU Maritime regulation). The Cruise Lines International Association reported on 16 September 2026 that 193 member ships can already use shore power, with 47 more planned for retrofit (CLIA).

Shipyards perform 58% of the work, while independent outfitters that rebuild cabins and public areas inside any yard are the fastest-growing provider group. Contemporary ships account for 56% of spending, and expedition and small ships are the fastest-growing ship segment. The top five repair yard groups hold about 35% of the market, so work is spread across many yards.

Europe does the work, the Caribbean grows fastest

Europe performs 60% of refurbishment work by value, because it has most of the large docks that cruise ships need, in Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Malta. Asia Pacific holds 16%, North America 11%, Latin America 9% and the Middle East and Africa 4%. Latin America is the fastest-growing region at a 12.4% CAGR, driven by Grand Bahama Shipyard: its 357-meter East End floating dock arrived in November 2025 as part of a USD 600 million transformation (Grand Bahama Shipyard), and the yard completed projects on 28 vessels in its 2026 cruise season, the first with the new dock (Grand Bahama Shipyard).

"Refits have become a revenue decision, not only a maintenance one. The programs announced in 2026 add cabins and venues to ships in mid-life, and they are booked years ahead because only a few docks can take the largest ships. Yards with that capacity close to the main cruise regions, in the Mediterranean and now the Bahamas, are best placed as the regulatory upgrades arrive toward 2030."
