Photo Light Box Specifications: A B2B Buyer's Guide to Size, Lighting, CRI and Price in 2026

By Growth Market Reports Research, published , updated

A photo light box is bought on six numbers: interior size, LED power and brightness, colour rendering index (CRI), colour temperature, dimming and the backdrops in the box. For B2B buyers, resellers and catalog teams, add power input, folded size, compliance marks and landed cost. This guide sets out what each specification means, what current models deliver at each price point in 2026, and a checklist you can send to a supplier.

Why specifications decide the result

Marketplaces set strict image rules. Amazon's seller guide asks for main images on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) and recommends a light tent or lightbox to spread light evenly around the product. A box with too little light or a low CRI produces grey backgrounds and off colours that need editing on every image, which is where the time cost sits for a seller shooting hundreds of products. With 5.6 million active sellers on Etsy at the end of 2025 alone, and independent sellers generating more than 60% of sales in Amazon's store, most buyers are small businesses that want images right straight from the camera.

The global photo light box market was worth USD 277 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 499 million by 2034, a CAGR of 6.8%, according to the Growth Market Reports photo light box market report. E-commerce product listings account for 58% of that revenue and compact foldable LED boxes up to 60 cm for 48.4%, so the specifications below are mostly about that product class, with notes for larger boxes and automated studios.

1. Interior size

Choose size by the largest product you shoot, then add room. As a working rule, the product should fill no more than about half the width of the box, so light wraps around it and the backdrop curve stays out of frame. Common sizes and what they fit:

2. LED power, lumens and lux

Wattage tells you power draw, not how bright the product will be. Ask for lumens (total light output) and, better, lux at the product position, which accounts for the box size and diffuser. Current reference points: the PULUZ 80 cm box lists 234 LEDs, 90W and 14,000 lumens; the Foldio4 lists 120W and 24,500 lumens; and NEEWER's LP boxes carry 144 to 192 LEDs at 40W to 50W. For automated and video work, Ortery quotes its LiveStudio 4 kit at 160W and 7,200 lux. More light lets you shoot at a low ISO and a small aperture, which keeps the whole product sharp.

Check how the LEDs are placed. A box with strips on the ceiling only lights the top of a product and leaves the front dark; Godox's 2026 catalogue separates its LSD tents (two LED strips) from LST tents (three strips) for this reason. Separate switches or dimmers for each strip let you shape shadows for glossy or reflective items.

3. Colour rendering (CRI and TLCI)

CRI measures how faithfully a light source shows colours on a 0 to 100 scale. For product images, where returns follow when the colour on screen does not match the item, specify CRI 95 or higher. This is no longer a premium feature: NEEWER rates its LP boxes at CRI 97+, Godox rates its LSD and LST tents at CRI 96+ with TLCI 98+ (a measure used for video), PULUZ rates its 80 cm box at CRI 95+ and ORANGEMONKIE rates the Foldio4 at CRI 98+. A box that does not state CRI on the product page should be treated as below 90.

4. Colour temperature and dimming

Most boxes use fixed daylight LEDs between 5,500K and 5,700K; the PULUZ 2 m kit is rated at 5,500K. Fixed daylight is fine for white-background catalog images as long as every box in a team is the same, so that images match across sellers or sites. Tunable models suit lifestyle and social content: the Iconasys LumiCube 360 can be set from 3,200K to 7,000K. Stepless dimming, ideally from 10% to 100%, matters more than tunable colour for most buyers, because it lets you balance reflective items without moving the camera.

5. Backdrops, openings and accessories

Look for at least white and black backdrops in a material that does not crease; PVC wipes clean and lies flat, fabric packs smaller but shows folds. A top opening for flat lays and a front flap or zip for overhead shots are standard on mid-priced boxes. If you plan 360 spins, check that the floor is large enough for a motorized turntable; the Foldio3 is sold at USD 289 to USD 369 bundled with one. Diffusion panels in front of the LEDs soften reflections on glass and metal.

6. Power input and portability

Small boxes run from USB, which suits sellers who shoot at markets or trade shows; larger boxes need a mains adapter, so specify the plug type for each destination market. PULUZ, for example, lists separate US-plug and EU-plug versions of its kits on its own store. For teams that move boxes between sites, ask for folded dimensions and weight, and whether the LED strips detach or fold in place.

Prices come from brand web stores and a camera retailer; the automated-studio range is quoted by Orbitvu's French distributor. The full photo light box price benchmarks sit in the report.

When a light box is not enough: automated studios

Automated light-box studios are the fastest-growing product type in the market. They add software control of the lights, the camera and often a turntable, so one operator can shoot many products with identical results. Orbitvu's Alphashot XL G2, on preorder since June 2026, uses 170 LED panels, takes products up to 25 kg and shoots up to 250 products a day. Ortery's 3D MultiArm 900 captures a full hemisphere of a product in one rotation, and its Capture version 24 software added editable AI background masks. For these systems, the specification list shifts to throughput per day, maximum product weight and size, camera compatibility, output formats and the cost of software and AI credits: Orbitvu cut AI masking to 5 credits per image from 15 in June 2026. Buyers comparing them against separate lighting kits can see the product photography automation software market and the softbox lighting market.

Landed cost and compliance for B2B orders

For bulk or reseller orders, the price on the supplier page is no longer the cost. The United States ended duty-free de minimis entry for low-value shipments from every country on 29 August 2025, and the EU charges a EUR 3 customs duty per item on parcels under EUR 150 from 1 July 2026. Shipping boxes in bulk to a regional warehouse, rather than one parcel per order, keeps the duty per unit low. Ask suppliers for CE and RoHS compliance; Godox states both for its products. Avoid fluorescent kits: parties to the Minamata Convention agreed to phase out fluorescent lamps for general lighting by 2027, so replacement tubes will get harder to find. LED already accounts for 93.3% of light box revenue.

Supplier specification checklist

  • Interior size (W x D x H) and folded size and weight
  • Number of LEDs, total wattage, lumens and lux at the product position
  • CRI (95+) and TLCI if you shoot video
  • Colour temperature and dimming range, and whether each strip is switched separately
  • Power input (USB or adapter) and plug type for each market
  • Backdrops included (colours and material), openings and diffusers
  • Turntable and camera mount compatibility
  • CE and RoHS marks, warranty, spare LED strips
  • Carton size, units per carton and landed cost after duties

Online marketplaces carry 58% of light box sales, but direct and dealer sales to businesses are the fastest-growing channel, so B2B buyers increasingly buy through dealers who can supply spares and support. Frequently asked questions

What CRI should a photo light box have?

CRI 95 or higher for product images. Mid-priced boxes now meet it: NEEWER rates its LP boxes at CRI 97+, Godox rates its LSD and LST tents at CRI 96+ and ORANGEMONKIE rates the Foldio4 at CRI 98+.

What size photo light box do I need?

Pick a box about twice the width of your largest product. A 40 to 60 cm box fits shoes, bags and most general merchandise; jewelry needs only 20 to 30 cm, and apparel needs 1 to 2 metres.

How much does a photo light box cost in 2026?

List prices run from USD 11.65 for a 20 cm PULUZ box and USD 59.99 for a NEEWER 40 cm box to USD 299 for the 100 cm Foldio4 and USD 487.50 for a 2 m PULUZ kit. Automated studios cost about EUR 10,000 to EUR 30,000.

Is wattage the best measure of light box brightness?

No. Wattage is power draw. Compare lumens and, where given, lux at the product position; the PULUZ 80 cm box lists 14,000 lumens at 90W and the Foldio4 lists 24,500 lumens at 120W.

Do import duties affect light box prices?

Yes. The US ended duty-free de minimis entry for low-value parcels on 29 August 2025 and the EU charges EUR 3 per item on parcels under EUR 150 from 1 July 2026, which adds most to the cheapest boxes.
