How Many Lickable Cat Treats Can a Cat Have a Day? Calories by Brand and the 10% Rule
By Growth Market Reports Research, published , updated
Most adult cats can have one to three lickable tubes a day, depending on the brand and the cat's weight. The rule that sets the limit comes from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA): all treats together should stay below 10% of a cat's daily calories, which works out to about 20 to 26 kcal a day for a typical 3 to 6 kg adult cat. A Churu tube has 6 kcal, a Delectables Squeeze Up tube 7.4 kcal and a Temptations Lickable Puree pouch just under 15 kcal, so the right number differs by brand. This guide shows the arithmetic, what is inside the tube, and when to give fewer.
The 10% rule and what it means in calories
WSAVA's client handout on feeding treats to your cat says treats should always make up less than 10% of a cat's daily calorie intake, and that they should never replace a meal. It counts anything given on top of a complete and balanced diet as a treat: commercial snacks, chews, supplements, human food and food used to give medication. That last point matters for lickables, because many owners use a tube to hide a pill.
The handout converts the rule into a daily treat allowance by body weight, based on an average healthy adult cat in ideal body condition:
| Cat's body weight | Maximum treat calories a day (WSAVA) |
|---|---|
| 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) | 18 kcal |
| 3 kg (6.6 lb) | 20 kcal |
| 4 kg (8.8 lb) | 22 kcal |
| 5 kg (11 lb) | 25 kcal |
| 6 kg (13.2 lb) | 26 kcal |
| 7 kg (15.4 lb) | 28 kcal |
The allowance rises slowly with weight, so a heavier cat does not earn many more treats. For comparison, WSAVA lists 1 oz of canned tuna in water at 36 kcal, already more than the full daily treat allowance for most cats.
Calories per tube: Churu vs Delectables vs Temptations
Lickable treats are mostly water, so their calories per tube are low compared with dry treats or human food. The three best-known US brands publish these figures on their product pages:
| Brand and product | Tube size | Calories per tube | Moisture | Tubes that fit a 4 kg cat's 22 kcal allowance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inaba Churu, Chicken Recipe | 0.5 oz (about 14 g) | 6.0 kcal | 91% max | Up to 3 (18 kcal) |
| Hartz Delectables Squeeze Up | 14 g | 7.4 kcal | 90% max | Up to 2 (14.8 kcal) |
| Temptations Lickable Puree, Chicken | 12 g | Less than 15 kcal | Not stated in page text | 1 |
Sources: Inaba Churu Chicken Recipe product page, Delectables Squeeze Up listing at PetSmart (530 kcal ME/kg, calculated) and Temptations Lickable Puree Chicken product page. The last column is our arithmetic: the WSAVA allowance divided by calories per tube, rounded down.
The table assumes the tube is the only treat the cat gets that day. If the cat also gets dental treats, crunchy treats or a bite of chicken, the lickable count has to come down. A 4 kg cat that has one Temptations pouch (just under 15 kcal) and one Churu tube (6 kcal) is already at about 21 kcal, close to its 22 kcal limit.
Why the brands differ
The difference is mainly water and protein. Churu's guaranteed analysis lists crude protein of at least 7% and moisture of up to 91%, with water as the first ingredient, followed by chicken, tapioca starch, natural flavors, guar gum, vitamin E, taurine and green tea extract. Delectables Squeeze Up is up to 90% moisture. A 12 g Temptations pouch carries more calories despite being smaller, so it counts for more of the daily allowance. Always read the calorie line on the pack, since WSAVA advises owners to ask the maker when a treat label does not state calories.
How many lickable treats for a kitten, a senior or an overweight cat?
- Overweight cats: the WSAVA allowance is based on a cat at ideal body condition. For a cat on a weight-loss plan, the vet sets a lower daily calorie target, and the treat allowance shrinks with it. One low-calorie tube a day, split into small licks, keeps the ritual without stalling weight loss.
- Cats with a medical condition or on a prescription diet: WSAVA says conventional treats may not be appropriate for cats with medical conditions, dietary sensitivities or a veterinary-prescribed diet. Ask the vet before giving any lickable, including functional ones sold for urinary or kidney support.
- Seniors: soft lickables need no chewing, which is why brands market them to older cats. The calorie limit is the same; the tube can simply make up a larger part of the treat budget.
- Kittens: check the pack. Many lickables are labelled for cats of all ages, but a treat should never displace a kitten's complete growth diet.
Are lickable cat treats healthy?
Used within the calorie limit, a lickable tube is a low-calorie treat with some practical benefits. Owners use them in three ways that the brands themselves describe: hand-fed straight from the tube as a bonding routine, poured into a dish, or squeezed over a meal as a topper. Temptations describes exactly these three uses on its Lickable Puree range page.
Hydration
Because they are about 90% water, lickables add a little moisture to a dry diet. By our arithmetic, one 14 g Churu tube at up to 91% moisture carries up to about 12.7 g of water, so three tubes add up to about 38 ml. That helps, but it is small next to a cat's total water intake, and it does not replace wet food or fresh water. Hydration is one of the reasons brands now sell lickables as functional products; see our pet hydration supplements market coverage for the wider category.
Pill hiding and vet visits
A smooth puree is one of the easiest ways to hide a crushed tablet or keep a cat still during grooming and handling. Count those tubes in the daily total too.
Treat or meal?
Most lickables are complementary treats, not food. Inaba's US Churu page says the product is "not intended to be fed as a meal." The line is starting to blur: INABA Foods USA brought Churu Complete 3oz cans, a complete-nutrition food in gravy and mousse textures, into select Target stores in August 2026, and Pet Honesty launched eight functional lickable purees with salmon and omega-3s in July 2026. If a product is labelled complete and balanced, it can be fed as part of the meal; if it is labelled as a treat, it belongs in the 10% budget.
What a daily tube habit costs
At September 2026 shelf prices, Churu cost about USD 0.57 a tube at Target (20 tubes for USD 11.49), Delectables Squeeze Up about USD 0.60 a tube (20 for USD 11.99) and Temptations Lickable Puree about USD 0.49 a tube (24 for USD 11.79). One Churu tube a day costs about USD 208 a year; two a day about USD 416. Bulk online boxes usually cut the price per tube, which is one reason online stores are the largest channel for these treats, with 34% of revenue.
Why the tube became a daily habit
Lickables have moved from an occasional reward to a daily ritual. The global lickable cat treats market was worth USD 1.46 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 3.06 billion by 2034, a CAGR of 8.6%, according to the Growth Market Reports lickable cat treats market report. Puree-based tubes, the original Churu format, earn 62% of that revenue. More cats and more daily use drive the growth: the American Pet Products Association counts 53 million US cat-owning households in 2025. The same daily habit is why veterinary guidance on treat calories matters more for lickables than for an occasional snack.
Lickables sit inside the wider cat treats market, and many owners use them as a meal topper, a use tracked in our pet food toppers market report. Functional versions overlap with the functional pet food market. For regional splits, the full segment breakdown and price benchmarks, see the full lickable cat treats report.
A simple daily plan
- Weigh the cat and find its treat allowance in the WSAVA table (about 20 to 26 kcal for most adult cats).
- Read the calories per tube on the pack: about 6 kcal for Churu, 7.4 kcal for Delectables Squeeze Up, under 15 kcal for Temptations Lickable Puree.
- Subtract any other treats given that day, then divide what is left by the calories per tube.
- Split a tube into two or three short sessions if the cat begs; the ritual matters more to most cats than the amount.
- Recheck with the vet at each visit, especially if the cat's weight changes or it starts a prescription diet.

Frequently asked questions
How many Churu can a cat have a day?
For a typical 4 kg adult cat, up to three Churu tubes a day if it gets no other treats. Each tube has 6 kcal, and WSAVA sets the daily treat allowance for a 4 kg cat at 22 kcal, 10% of its daily calories.
How many calories are in a lickable cat treat?
It depends on the brand. Inaba Churu Chicken Recipe lists 6.0 kcal per 14 g tube, Delectables Squeeze Up lists 7.4 kcal per 14 g tube, and Temptations Lickable Puree lists less than 15 kcal per 12 g pouch.
Can lickable treats replace wet food?
Not unless the pack says the product is complete and balanced. Most lickables are treats; Inaba's Churu page says it is not intended to be fed as a meal. Complete-nutrition versions such as Churu Complete cans are sold separately.
Do lickable treats help cats stay hydrated?
A little. Churu tubes are up to 91% moisture, so one 14 g tube carries up to about 12.7 g of water. That adds moisture to a dry diet but does not replace fresh water or wet food.
Can I give lickable treats to a cat with kidney disease?
Ask your vet first. WSAVA advises that conventional treats may not be appropriate for cats with medical conditions or on a veterinary-prescribed diet, and the vet can say which treats and how many fit the plan.
