How Much Do Fiberglass Roofing Shingles Cost in 2026? Prices per Bundle and per Square

By Growth Market Reports Research, published , updated

Fiberglass roofing shingles cost about USD 43 to 47 a bundle for a mainstream laminated (architectural) shingle at a U.S. home center in September 2026, and about USD 38 to 43 a bundle for a basic 3-tab strip shingle. With three bundles to a roofing square of 100 square feet, that is roughly USD 130 to 145 per square for laminates before underlayment, accessories and labor. Impact-resistant Class 4 and designer shingles cost more. This guide explains where those prices come from, what the factory earns, and when paying extra is worth it.

Are fiberglass shingles the same as asphalt shingles?

In North America, yes. A fiberglass shingle is an asphalt shingle built on a nonwoven glass fiber mat, coated on both sides with filled asphalt and topped with ceramic-coated granules. The U.S. product standard is ASTM D3462, the specification for asphalt shingles made from glass felt, and ARMA explains how a shingle is shown to comply with it. Owens Corning's Duration and TAMKO's Heritage lines are both glass-mat shingles made to that standard. So when a roofer quotes "asphalt shingles" or "fiberglass shingles" for a house in the United States or Canada, they are almost always quoting the same product. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association says four out of five U.S. residential roofs are covered with asphalt shingles.

Cost per bundle vs cost per square

Shingles are sold by the bundle and roofs are measured in squares. One square covers 100 square feet of roof, and standard laminated and 3-tab shingles come three bundles to the square. Always check the coverage printed on the wrapper: a Duration bundle covers 32.8 square feet and a Supreme bundle 33.3 square feet, so the per-square price is slightly more than three times the bundle price.

A simple budget for the shingles alone works like this:

  • Measure the roof area in squares, including the pitch. A roof with 2,500 square feet of surface is 25 squares.
  • Add waste for cuts at valleys, hips and edges; roofers commonly add a margin on complex roofs.
  • Multiply bundles by price. A 25-square roof needs about 75 bundles of laminated shingles, roughly USD 3,300 to 3,500 at Home Depot shelf prices for Duration.
  • Add components: starter strips, hip and ridge shingles, underlayment, flashing, vents and nails, then labor and tear-off.

Weight matters for delivery and for the old roof coming off. New asphalt shingles weigh 175 to 233 pounds per square, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, so a 25-square roof puts two to three tonnes of shingles on the deck. That is one reason most shingles move through roofing distributors that deliver straight to the roof: by Growth Market Reports' analysis, distributors handle about 80% of market value.

What the factory earns: about USD 72 a square

Customs data show what manufacturers actually realize. U.S. exports of HS 6807.90, the tariff line for asphalt articles other than rolls where shingles are classified, were worth USD 316.0 million for 418.7 million kilograms in 2025, or USD 0.755 per kilogram, and Canadian exports averaged USD 0.81 per kilogram, according to UN Comtrade. At about 95 kilograms per square, that is about USD 72 per square, a little over half the shelf price of a Duration laminate. The gap is the distributor and retailer margin, delivery and contractor rebates. Chinese exports of the same tariff line averaged only USD 0.45 per kilogram in 2024, about USD 43 per square, which is why low-cost imports matter in markets such as Chile and Mexico but rarely compete on U.S. roofs.

3-tab vs architectural vs designer: which costs what

Strip (3-tab) shingles are the cheapest per bundle and lie flat in a single layer. They are now a small niche: laminates made up 95% of U.S. shingle squares in 2025 in Owens Corning's reading of ARMA data, and by our analysis strip shingles hold only about 4% of global market value and keep shrinking toward repairs and low-cost rentals.

Laminated (architectural) shingles bond two layers for a thicker, dimensional look and longer warranties. They cost only a few dollars more per bundle than 3-tab at retail, which is why they won the market: laminated shingles earn 79% of 2025 global value, by Growth Market Reports' analysis.

Luxury (designer) shingles imitate slate or cedar shake with heavier, multi-layer construction. They cost the most per square and are the fastest-growing product type in the market, as homeowners who once looked at synthetic slate or real shake choose a shingle system instead.

Are Class 4 impact-resistant shingles worth the premium?

Class 4 shingles pass the UL 2218 impact test and usually use polymer-modified asphalt that flexes under hail rather than cracking. Examples include CertainTeed Landmark ClimateFlex and TAMKO HailGuard, launched in February 2026 as what TAMKO calls the first asphalt shingle system with a hail warranty. HailGuard carries a 160 mph wind warranty when installed with TAMKO's starter and hip and ridge components, and TAMKO says it is available in select regions.

Three facts help decide. First, hail is the main risk in much of the country: U.S. severe convective storms caused more than USD 50 billion of insured losses for a third year in a row, and hail drives up to 80% of those claims. Second, not all Class 4 products perform alike. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety rated 24 impact-resistant shingle products in 2025, covering about 95% of impact-resistant shingles sold each year, using laboratory-made hailstones; most earned Good and none earned Excellent. Third, some states pay part of the cost. Alabama's Strengthen Alabama Homes program, run by the state Department of Insurance, provides grants of up to USD 10,000 to reroof to the FORTIFIED standard.

If you live in a hail belt, plan to stay in the house, and your insurer or state program rewards stronger roofs, a Class 4 laminate usually pays back. In a mild coastal or low-hail area, a standard laminate with a good wind rating is often the better value. Check the IBHS rating of the exact product, not only the Class 4 label.

Why shingle prices are moving in 2026

Demand fell in 2025: U.S. and Canadian shipments dropped 10.3% for the year and 27.9% in the fourth quarter, according to ARMA, as the heavy 2024 storm season pulled replacements forward. Owens Corning's Roofing sales fell 14% in the first quarter of 2026 and rose 1% in the second quarter, when the company also flagged about USD 40 million of extra third-quarter costs linked to the Iran conflict. Asphalt is an oil product, so crude and freight costs feed straight into shingle list prices. At the same time, IKO, CertainTeed, Malarkey and GAF are adding North American plants between 2026 and 2029, which should limit shortages when the next storm season lifts demand.

Shingles vs other roofs on cost

ARMA notes that metal roofs are more expensive than asphalt shingles, and clay tile, concrete tile, slate and cedar shake are premium alternatives. For most detached homes in North America, a laminated fiberglass shingle roof remains the lowest-cost full system with a manufacturer warranty. Compare the options in our reports on the metal roofing market, the synthetic slate roofing market and the roof underlayment market, since underlayment is a real line item on every shingle quote.

The market behind the prices

By Growth Market Reports' analysis, the global glass fiber roofing shingle market was worth USD 13.83 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 18.50 billion by 2034, a 3.3% CAGR. North America holds 87.31% of value, reroofing and renovation 85%, and the top five manufacturers about 70%. Frequently asked questions

How much does a bundle of fiberglass shingles cost?

At U.S. home centers in September 2026, Owens Corning Duration laminated shingles cost USD 43.47 to 46.97 a bundle and Supreme 3-tab shingles about USD 38 to 43, depending on color. Contractor prices through distributors are negotiated and usually lower.

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Three bundles of standard laminated or 3-tab shingles cover one square, which is 100 square feet of roof. Check the wrapper: a Duration bundle covers 32.8 square feet and a Supreme bundle 33.3 square feet.

Are fiberglass shingles and asphalt shingles the same thing?

In North America, yes. Modern asphalt shingles are built on a glass fiber mat coated with asphalt and granules and are made to ASTM D3462, the standard for asphalt shingles made from glass felt.

Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost over 3-tab?

Usually yes. At retail they cost only a few dollars more per bundle, look more dimensional and carry longer warranties, which is why laminates made up 95% of U.S. shingle squares in 2025 and 79% of global market value.

Do Class 4 impact-resistant shingles cost more?

Yes, they carry a price premium because they use polymer-modified asphalt. In hail-prone states the premium can pay back through fewer claims and programs such as Alabama's FORTIFIED roof grants of up to USD 10,000.

What does the manufacturer earn per square of shingles?

About USD 72 per square, by Growth Market Reports' analysis of UN Comtrade export values of USD 0.755 per kilogram in 2025 at roughly 95 kilograms per square, a little over half the retail shelf price.
